Following a decorated playing career which included two AFL premierships with the West Coast Eagles, Pyke entered into coaching when offered a position with the Claremont Football Club in 1999. He then pursued business opportunities in the oil and gas industry and served as a Board Director at the Eagles, before returning to coaching as an assistant to Neil Craig at the Crows in 2005. The 2017 International Game Sense Conference (3–5 July 2017, Flinders University, Adelaide) was an important event for leaders in Physical Education and Sport Coaching using the Game Sense approach in the Asia-Pacific region.

There were breakout sessions to suit everybody – from Physical Education teachers, those researching Game Sense to Professional coaches, volunteer coaches, sport managers and government advisors on sport /education pedagogy and policy. In physical education and coaching of sporting activities, games-based approaches to teaching and coaching focus on the designing of games to facilitate player learning. Through modified games and game-like activities coaches/teachers can couple the learning of both technique and strategies.

History of the Game Sense conference series:

The Game Sense Conferences were developed by Prof Richard Light  to focus on the Game Sense approach and on the Asia Pacific region. The first three conferences were held in Sydney beginning in 2006 and run as one-day events to promote a relaxed atmosphere conducive to sharing and developing ideas. In 2015 the conference went overseas to Christchurch, New Zealand and was expanded to a two day event with day one focused on oral presentations and day two on practical demonstrations more aimed at local teachers and coaches. This year’s conference was convened by ACHPER South Australia and continued the tradition of sharing ideas and open debate and discussion in the ongoing development of Game Sense and other GBA.
