The Program
The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation was pleased to provide an exciting Program in their 27th International/National Conference 18th – 20th April in the facilities and grounds of Adelaide’s beautiful Prince Alfred College. At the Conference heard from leading National and International educators and researchers across the professions of Physical Education, Health Education, and Recreation. There is a growing body of evidence from global research in brain science that reveals a strong connection between human movement, enhanced learning and cognitive development. A major objective of the Conference was to focus on this compelling evidence, its implications, and review any successful strategies for its implementation across the professions through the Conference theme ‘Moving, Learning, & Achieving’. The intention was to broaden the understanding about the importance of Physical, Health Education, and Recreation in the education process of people of all ages across the lifespan. It confirmed in teachers at all levels of education and the wider community, particularly those in a leadership role in HPE, that human movement plays a fundamental role in the processes of healthy human cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual, and physiological growth and development. The Conference balanced the universally accepted HPE doctrine of the use of human motion for the education and development of the whole person: An important aim of the conference was to make these global experts as accessible as possible to all participants through many formal and informal opportunities over the 3 days of the Conference. · Jean Blaydes Madigan Texas

Conference Themes & Sub-Themes

The conference theme 'Moving, Learning and Achieving' has guided presenters to construct their presentations to connect with enhanced learning through moving to achieve in the sub themes of their expertise:
... an active and healthy life reflecting resilience, optimism and well-being |
... new sport and education strategies and links |
... improved motor learning, competent players and participants |
... enhanced early childhood development |
... a more effective, active curriculum |
... increased personal responsibility and quality social interactions |
... quality outdoor journeys and recreation pastimes |
Local, interstate, and overseas presenters prepared interactive sessions to inspire and share with participants their successful programs and or findings in relation to the sub-themes. The major theme ‘Moving, Learning, & Achieving’ provides a fresh approach to the profession and stimulates new practices that gave greater effectiveness to teaching because they are based on what best enhances learning in the learner. The exciting news for HPE professionals is that movement is emerging as one of the most significant experiences in cognitive development and academic achievement in students. At the same time human movement is proving to be irrefutable as an essential behaviour in the development and maintenance of healthy living. These two essential aspects of human development are predicated on the students receiving motion stimulation – the cornerstone of the HPE professional!

Brilliant mix of theory and practice
The conference was a brilliant mix of theory and practice that includes more than 139 presentations. Because of the wide scope of the presentations from local, national, and international presenters there is much to appeal to all participants. The conference program features a range of formats, including 45 or 90 minute active and non-active practical sessions, 20 minute theoretical presentations, keynote speakers, poster presentations, symposia, and panel discussions. You can choose to attend hands-on practical sessions for each of the 3 days where examples, ideas, and teaching approaches are exchanged relating to a range of games, dance, sports, active academics, student performance, and health topics. Sessions were arranged to be as interactive as possible to provide maximum opportunity for exchange of ideas between participants and presenters. There was a minimum of 3 hours of practical sessions to enjoy each day! Or, you could have choosen to attend selected practicals mixed with some of the short 20 minute theory presentations available to hear about successful programs across a range of issues such as un-motivated students (cultural inclusivity, gender divides, social skill building, fundamental motor skills, healthy living projects etc) , research outcomes, curriculum initiatives, teacher preparation/education, and active learning in the classroom.
